April 13th, 2004

This year my mother, my friend Ariel, and I went to the Tartan Day Parade. Tartan Day is sort of like St. Patrick's Day only for the Scots. The American Congress made April 6th, Tartan Day, to commemorate the signing of the Declaration of Arbroath. The WHAT? It's a thing signed in 1320 by the Scots when they wanted to get rid of the English, that the American Founding Fathers used when they wanted to get rid of the English, to get some of their ideas when writing The Declaration of Independence.
Anyway, we went to the parade and watched men in kilts play bagpipes with jet black Scottie Dogs wearing bonnets running at their heels, go down the Avenue of The Americas. Ariel and I, both clad in plaid outfits made by my Grandma, viewed the whole thing from behind police barriers on the sidewalk. Actually our outfits were so cool that some photographers took pictures of us, and sure enough a picture of us showed up in today's New York Times! When I get the actual photo we'll put it on the site. The parade was very fun to watch and hear. It was a very exciting Scottish Day.

Love, Sam
